the package

structure: to use and to reimagine

brown paper package with gramophone inside it.jpg

structure as scaffolding

  • something for a story, concept, feeling to build around

  • a creative tool for the maker, rather than simply a roadmap for the listener

structure as starting point

  • creative direction, editing tool, a way to strip barriers to entry

  • be comfortable with the structure changing, or asking to be abandoned in the creative process

ask yourself these questions

  • Is it because you’ve never tried that before?

  • Is it because it feels most suited to what the story needs?

  • Do you think it will be more interesting/more “marketable”?

  • Is it similar to something you’ve already heard and loved?

  • Is it because it’s the safest/most in your comfort zone? — whether that’s because it’s emotionally safer, logistically less challenging, stylistically familiar.

the remagining

  • there are many ways to tell a "good" story

  • understanding well used structures give you the opportunity to question and subvert them

lesson 2 assignments

lesson assignment: the thing itself

  • Make a 3 min or shorter piece about an object or idea and shape it like that object or idea.

    • Ex. A piece about melting shaped like the process of a melting ice cube

  • This is open to wild interpretations and meant to be playful – have fun with it

  • Upload Assignments here -- 24 hours prior to class to be played, up unto class otherwise

course assignment: something big, something small

Ie. Taking something that feels big and going really small.
This week:

  • Take the idea you worked through last week and start turning it into an audio piece – with a structure in mind

  • OPTIONAL: take your tape, your writing, your sounds and make three drafts structured 3 different ways.

    • You can use a maximum of 2 structures from those we discussed in class. A least one should be something you come up with on your own.
